Isle of Palms
One of Charleston’s most popular vacation beach communities.
Isle of Palms lies along a narrow strip of land, hugging the beach, separated from the mainland by the Intracoastal Waterway. It is an affluent community of both vacation home owners and year-round residents, with large beachfront homes, resorts, and local restaurants. Bordered by pristine beaches and a network of marsh creeks, the barrier island of Isle of Palms has been a vacation spot since the late 19th century when it was only accessible by ferry. In 1929, a bridge was built, which opened up the island to more than just the local residents. Today, it’s the island’s great fishing, 6 miles of white, sandy beaches, and golf that make it a major tourist destination. Its residents still look to enjoy peaceful serenity, particularly in the off-peak months.
